In answer to consumer requests for additional barrel-aged and well-aged whisky, Thomas H. Handy invented Sazerac Straight Rye Whiskey. This product is made up of barrels that are older than six years. The whisky in these barrels was loaded in 2009 at 125 proof, but after many years of age, it is currently 126.9 proof.
The Sazerac glass bottle selected for Thomas H. Handy
The Buffalo Trace Antique Collection’s youngest release, Thomas H. Handy Sazerac Rye, is only six years old. Since Sazerac Rye 18-Year-Old, its older sibling, is the oldest, Sazerac idioms serve as the series’ bookends.
But don’t be fooled by its youth; Thomas H. Handy is no novice. The Thomas H. Handy Sazerac Rye 2015 vintage earned Best American Rye Whiskey at the 2016 World Whiskies Awards earlier this year.
The 2010 batch that was bottled this year was matured in Warehouses I, K, and M on the fourth, fifth, and seventh floors. Because they are higher up, the temperature will be higher and the spirit and oak will interact more.
With a very coherent taste, Thomas H. Handy offers a lovely balance between spicy and sweet, earthy and herbaceous flavors. Another excellent whisky from Buffalo Trace, albeit I felt the finish a touch too similar to Luden’s cherry cough pills.
